How It Works

FAQs

Answers about the plan, including eligibility, options, enrollment, customer service and more.
  • Who is the provider?

MetLife Legal Plans is the country’s largest provider of legal voluntary benefits, serving nearly 5 million people at about 3,000 organizations, including over 200 of Fortune 500® companies. We have more than 40 years of experience in employee legal services and are committed to providing excellent care to our plan members, sponsors and network attorneys.
  • How can this help me?

Have you ever wished you had an attorney in the family? Someone who could:

    • Send a letter to an auto dealership and get them to fix your car right.
    • Call the credit card company so they’d erase a disputed charge on your account.
    • Could review contracts related to a home purchase or sale.

Now you can get something even better with your legal benefit. This benefit puts a team of attorneys on your side … ready whenever you need help on legal matters or financial issues. That means you can have an attorney draw up a will. Have a lawyer defend you for a traffic matter. Even get a legal opinion on what to do about a neighbor’s fence that’s sitting on your property—and it’s all covered under your legal benefit. Sound too good to be true? It’s not.

  • Who is eligible?

The plan covers most personal legal services. The following matters are excluded from coverage:

    • Employment-related matters, including company or statutory benefits
    • Matters involving your employer, MetLife and affiliates, and Plan Attorneys
    • Matters in which there is a conflict of interest between the employee and spouse or dependents in which case services are excluded for the spouse and dependents
    • Appeals and class actions
    • Farm matters, business or investment matters, matters involving property held for investment or rental, or issues when the Participant is the landlord
    • Patent, trademark and copyright matters
    • Costs or fines
    • Frivolous or unethical matters

Please Note: You are encouraged to use the plan to resolve as many legal issues as possible, even if they are pre-existing matters. The only pre-existing matters that are not covered are those for which you have retained an attorney before becoming eligible for plan benefits. This is necessary to protect the existing attorney-client relationship.

Please refer to the plan certificate for additional details.

  • What attorney can I use?

You'll have access to a nationwide network of more than 18,000 participating attorneys from which to choose. Network Attorneys have an average of 25 years or more of legal experience and have met stringent selection criteria. If you stay within the network, covered legal services are provided with no additional attorney fees. You also have the flexibility to use an out-of-network attorney and get reimbursed for covered services according to a set fee schedule.

Visit MetLife Legal Plans to find a Network Attorney near you.

  • How is the attorney paid?

Attorneys' services for covered legal matters are fully paid for by the plan except for excluded matters and third-party fees. When services are rendered for covered matters, you do not receive a bill for the Network Attorney and they do not complete a claim form. All billing and payments are handled directly between the Network Attorney and the plan.
  • What if my employment status changes?

You may continue coverage by electing the option of portability when you no longer qualify as an eligible employee of the Policyholder or as a Member of the group to which the Plan is issued. You must apply for portability within 30 days of your last day of employment. Portability coverage will take effect, subject to payment of the initial premium, as of the date your coverage under the group policy terminates.

Group legal plans are provided by MetLife Legal Plans, Cleveland, Ohio. In certain states, the plans are provided through insurance coverage underwritten by Metropolitan Property and Casualty Company and Affiliates, Warwick, Rhode Island.
